About Jujitsu: Jujitsu History & Jujitsu Today

Jujitsu History

With a history that can be traced back as far as 2,000 years ago, Jujitsu in its’ truest form, as opposed to Judo, karate, teakwondo (to name a few), strived to avoid the lure of the sporting arena and retained its status as a martial art. Ju-jitsu is a combination of two words - Ju, which can be translated as "soft" or "gentle", and Jitsu, meaning "art". Thus we have the definition translated as; 'gentle art'. Ju also translates to mean compliant , flexible and yielding. If you analyse the core principle of Jujitsu: "Force should never be met with force. Jujitsu redirects the energy created by the attack into a counter move, rather than working against the attacking force."

Jujitsu Today

Jujitsu has evolved over the centuries to become the 'effective' form of self defence it is today. Jujitsu is no longer needed for the battlefields of medieval Japan but the streets of today.  With violence on the streets of today’s towns and cities increasing and the chosen weapons being; knives, bottles, base ball bats etc, Jujitsu still has a valued place in our society today.
